Reminder: Poll Ends This Week!

Just a quick note, the current poll running on the blog ends later this week! The poll asks "What genre would you like to see more of on the blog?" There are already a nice cross section of votes, with "Keep it as it is!" in the lead over second place "Vis-kei/Goth." Really? Well, nice to know I'm doing a good job! Or am I?

Have you voted? If not, what would you like to see more of? Hit up the poll (doesn't that sound dirty to anyone else?) and make your voice heard. Something new will take it's place on February 1st, so don't delay!

Thanks!

Yes! Here we are. Um. Yeah. You'd think that after doing 72 of these damn shows that I'd be a little more adept at plugging in some sort of profound rumination on the varied state of the music world, but no. No, every week I sit here, smashing my face against the keyboard with the hopes that something readable will spill out.  Every week, I am disappointed. Alas.

Anyway...

This week, new stuff from Sakanaction, some nice electro-pop from 1000Say, some Supercar nostalgia and Mass of the Fermenting Dregs in the Artist Spotlight.

Mass of the Fermenting Dregs

Mass of the Fermenting Dregs

When it comes to female powered rock bands, there often seems to be a propensity for them to fall into one of two extremes. Either the super loud and gnarly grrrl rock, or the softer, cutesy side of pop rock. For some reason it feels like girls either rock hard or not at all. Mass of the Fermenting Dregs shatters this lazy and myopic view into tiny glittering pieces. Their ten-ton drums and massive bass bring the weight while singer/bassist Natsuko Miyamoto alleviates the pain with her clear yet strong voice.

Formed in 2002 out of Kobe Japan, the band, like so many others, seemed to take its time releasing material. Their first self-titled mini album didn't surface until 2008, with their second, World is Yours, quickly following it up in early 2009. Originally a trio of women, their drummer left just before their first release. Now they are officially just a duo with supporting drummers. Perhaps just as important to their sound is who they have working the board in the studio. Both Kentaro Nakao, ex-bassist of Number Girl, and the incomparable Dave Friedmann (Weezer, Low, OK Go, The Flaming Lips, not to mention Number Girl and Zazen Boys as well) have crafted the Dregs' sound.

And an epic sound it is. While the songs themselves are not overly complex, they are quite dark and expansive in scope. The guitar and bass feed off each other to form some pretty grim chords while the drums keep things moving at a brisk pace. Think Ogre Your Asshole's tone meets Vola & the Oriental Machine's energy with a little bit of Chatmonchy's upbeat vocals. While the Dregs' sound may be dark, the songs somehow transcend the fog and have much more power than your average post-punk or shoegaze band. They are very poppy in a sense, yet not in a dumbed-down way. First and foremost, they write superb songs that just might lull you into a false sense of security right before breaking your skull open. So pay attention.

1000say

Following in the footsteps of other bands like The Aprils and Nirgilis, 1000say is a synth-pop band that sidesteps the usual trappings of the genre. Sure, they are cute and upbeat, but they are also very restrained and soft spoken. Not so soft as to be mistaken for the sea of twee-pop bedroom acts who whisper their way through sometimes abstract experimentation. Instead, 1000say ride the line between strong pop tunes and sugar-shock.

Formed in 2005, the band has only recently begun to release material. Their first mini-album surfaced late in 2008, the second in early 2009. Their full band configuration gives them a more versatile sound than straight up electro pop. They can rock out from time to time, though they usually choose to keep things a little mellow. Even their vocal performances, switching between male and female leads (again, much like The Aprils,) can swing from blissed-out to slightly rough and forceful. They never go over the top into anything truly tough or angry, but they do amp things up a bit.

Their songs really are worthy of something more than a cast-off "pop" classification. They have a certain depth and well-developed structure that's often missing from other electro-dance tracks. In this way they are more like Sakanaction or even Supercar at times, melding twinkling synth space-outs with powerful guitars riffs. Instead of distilling out all of the character that makes for an interesting song, 1000say build the songs up into much more than a vapid "hit." They let the songs wander and stretch just a bit, something vital to retain repeat listening. They give the listener something to hold on to, which is exactly what all good music should do.

Solaris (ソラリス)

Solaris are a tight little indie group formed in Kyoto around 2004. Before one can even really begin to talk about their sound, the rather unique vocal sound of front man Hanotomo needs to be addressed. While he's not harsh or unprofessional in any way, he's got the voice of geekdom personified. Not just the usual higher range that many male Japanese singers have, but truly whiny, nasal and squeaky. Again, it's not offensive in any way, and after you've listened through a few songs it becomes almost normal. Yet it is an issue that will keep many first time listeners distracted from the music.

Speaking of which, Solaris is a very capable and solid indie rock outfit. Their songs are tight and to-the-point, very melodic yet encased in a slightly jagged shell. Their production is like much of the current crop of post-punk bands, simple and clean guitar/bass/drums, full of quick delays and booming reverb. They're a bit like Base Ball Bear crossed with Art School and injected with the spirit of Yogurt Pooh. There songs are also very focused, wavering little in their generally upbeat, danceable bounce.

Like other vocally eccentric bands (Ling Tosite Sigure instantly comes to mind) Solaris certainly uses the uniqueness to their advantage, but they most certainly do not use it as a crutch. While they have only released a single full-length album over their four year span, Youth of Distortion is one great, catchy song after another. The band has released a number of demos and singles, so it will be interesting to see if they can keep the quality (and Hanotomo's voice!) as high from here on out.

Winnie

On both their official website and their official MySpace page, Winnie list the American band Jimmy Eat World as a major influence, and it shows. The two bands do sound similar, with Winnie softening up the already light emo-rock vibe even more. This softer side is due mostly to the gentle vocal delivery of dual singers Iori (female) and Okuji (male). In fact, Iori sings very much in the style of Brilliant Green and Tommy Heavenly6/Tommy February6 vocalist Tomoko Kawase. Both Iori and Okuji sing and play guitar, alternating between male and female leads. This is off-set by the large, dual-guitar driven style of the music. While it never gets very heavy or fast, Winnie does pack a punch.

Formed in 2002, the band has released three mini albums in the past six years, two of them after a five year pause. 2003's First Class Speed of Light is a very soft spoken affair, full of fuzzed-out dreamy pop rock with shimmering edges. 2008's The Darkest Eternal Lights picks up the pace with much louder production and harder hitting songs. They still remain firmly in soft rock territory, but bring a heavier arsenal to the table. 2009's Headquarter is much the same, with the production once again adding a very heavy punch to the otherwise soft songs.

While Winnie seems to be aiming directly for the middle-of-the-road demographic with their slightly "edgy" sound tempered greatly by their down-tempo vibe, it would be great to hear them let loose even more. Tracks like "Suck My Brain" show that they have a lot of energy burbling underneath their blurry outer shell, and that they can really rock out when they want to. On the other hand, they do manage to walk that fine line very well, reaching out to both the softer set and those who need a little more bang for their buck.

Maruosa / Deathstorm

There's a fine line between noise and art. On the one hand, it's easy to just plug some things into a distortion pedal and make noise. On the other, turning that noise into something more obviously crafted is something else. When do the blasts of micro drum loops become a song? When do the single note guitar beats form something coherent?

These are the lines that Maruosa walks. On the surface, he's just some beastman rolling around on stage and shouting into a microphone while these washes of lethal sonic daggers shoot out of the speakers. Look a little deeper (if your ears can handle it) and you'll realize that this is all very carefully planned. Sure, the songs sound like Alec Empire and Venetian Snares run at fast forward, but it is all pre-planned and very finely crafted. While it's impossible to tell if there are any real words being formed in this storm, Maruosa's message is pretty clear: there is no message. Everything is destroyed and razed to the ground, pummeled into a fine dust through rage and sound. The end result is a bit like the Maldoror project from Merzbow and Mike Patton, only much less abstract.

Maruosa also provides the voice for the Deathstorm project, with Bong-Ra of the Netherlands being the second half of that equation. With Deathstorm, the songs become even more highly edited, with the occasional syth texture added to the otherwise exclusively drum-based pallet. If Maruosa's solo work seems a little too stark, then Deathstorm is the slightly more "deep" alternative, though no less challenging.

Maruosa has made a bit of a name for himself overseas, playing gigs all over the world, through all of Europe, Australia and the US. With a host of new albums planned, the world might want to keep an eye open and watch their backs for more Maruosa live gigs.

iLL

Being the solo work of Koji Nakamura, ex-frontman of the highly popular and influential indie-rock/shoegaze/electro band Supercar, it's perhaps understandable (if not inevitable) to want to compare the music of iLL to that of Supercar. This isn't helped by the fact that they are, in many ways, very similar. Similar enough to say with confidence that if you like one, you'll like the other.

Two of the largest missing pieces from the Supercar puzzle are bassist and vocalist Miki Furukawa, who brought the female voice to the Supercar equation and the more electronic slant that Supercar adopted later in their career (see Highvision.) iLL keeps the quiet and muzzy shoegaze vibe though, as well as the morose tone of Nakamura's own vocal delivery.

While Nyantora, another of Nakamura project, is almost 100% ambient electronic, iLL is rooted in rock, albeit very spaced out and simplified. Many of the songs are very repetitive and almost drone-like, though far from atonal. They often work themselves into a trance-like state with a wall of reverberant guitars and crashing drums. Again much like Supercar, the electronic elements are kept to a minimum, but when used are rather organic and raw.

iLL's output has greatly increased as of late, with two full length albums released in 2008. While many fans are still mourning the passing of Supercar, the can at least console themselves knowing that its shattered pieces are still spreading their own light into the music world.

Album Review: BLOOD - Lost Sky

It's a sad thing to see a band that has worked so hard for so long, all on their own, without major label support, suddenly throw in the towel and call it quits. Such is the case for the electro/goth/industrial band BLOOD. After six years of touring around the world on their own dime, BLOOD will be making a pass through America one last time before disbanding. This came a something of a shock to their fans, and in an interview I did with the band not too long before their announcement, everything seemed just fine. They were a little upset at the current state of the visual-kei music scene that they had abandon in favor of their more purely industrial format, but otherwise there were no outward signs of their impending doom.

Before they exit the stage however, they've left a few treats for the hardcore fans. On their last tour they plan to do everything possible to meet and greet with fans, even hosting a dinner at one event. They also provided material for a remix competition open to everyone.

The results of the competition make up two-thirds of their final album Lost Sky. Seven different versions fill up the second half of the album, along with three other remixes. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

The real album, the new stuff, kicks off with the title track. It's a rather subdued dance track (well, all of the songs on Lost Sky are very techno oriented) with soft synth pads and all of the guitars pushed far back in the mix. "Lost Sky" is all about the softer side of their electro goth sound, full of fog and gauze.

That's followed up with one of the best songs I've heard from the band, "Captured." Here the guitars are much heavier and upfront. The beats are still a little pillowy, but but the synths have a nice hard edge and the arrangement is closer to the elegant sort of orchestration we've come to expect from the visual scene. "Nothing" ramps things up even further with a fast tempo and a totally pummeling chorus much more like heavy metal than techno. Forget what I said about "Captured," this is the best BLOOD song I've heard. It's full of the sort of energy missing in the previous tracks. If they had to go out, this is a good note to go out on.

"Absolute" has a very similar feel to "Nothing," only more chaotic and a little too muffled. This time it's the vocals that are pushed far back, making the song feel a bit more like an unpolished rush job than a finished album track. "Oroboro" also has a slightly off-kilter feel, through the choruses have a very nice melody, pushing Fu-ki's vocals to the limit. The album proper ends, fittingly, with "The End," a short, instrumental track that really just stumbles to the finish. It's an odd choice considering the general power that the rest of the album contains.

Which brings us to the albums seven "Lost Sky" remixes. The Noir du`Soleil remix substitutes some early Aphex Twin beats for the more pulsing original, along with a lot of swooshy synths. It has an austere feel, slower and buried under layers of arpeggiated lines.

The sawDUST in me remix sticks very closely to the original and is incredibly out of tune in the choruses. This track should not have seen the light of day. Let's move on.

Thankfully the marlee remix is there to save the day. While it doesn't add anything new structurally to the song, it has an absolutely huge break beat and added guitars that really stomp along, giving it a much needed edge. The Spectrum-X remix is just a mess, end of story. The Shiv-r remix, however, is excellent. It manages to find new avenues to explore with the melody, using only the original vocal track and rebuilding the entire track from the ground up. Sure, it lumbers along, but the stark and brooding atmosphere hits just the right spot.

The Mizuh remix speeds things up with the first, and only, tempo change fromt he remixes. Mizuh adds in a few trance elements, filtering the building synth lines that are a bit reminiscent of all those "1998" remixes. It certainly adds more underlying pulse and throb, through the swirly synth strings are a bit overpowering. Finally, the Broken Lullaby remix by Echostream is the only track that actually takes the song in a completely new direction, substituting toy pianos and fuzzed out organs for the cyber-goth constructs. It all works out extraordinarily well. That is, until the unfortunate guitar-on-a-mountain-top solo right at the end.

The final three tracks are also remixes, though of older BLOOD tracks. "Crimson," "BLOOD" and "d.T.M.H." all get the once over, but all fall a little flat. Perhaps the initial six tracks are to blame. They far outshine the remix material, making the end of the album a drag. If purchased in an mp3 format, I can't imagine many of the remixes lasting for very long on anyone's hard drive.

Yet it's not the legacy of these remixes that listeners will be getting into Lost Sky for in the first place. It's the quality of the actual original content, as well as the legacy that BLOOD leaves behind. Sure, they may not have taken over the world with their music, but their independent energy and determination in a sea of flashy mediocrity are something to admire, and something for them to be proud of.

And in one final note, in the interest of full disclosure,, I also entered into the remix competition myself. You can download my mix here.]

Hyacca (百蚊)

When it comes to expecting the unexpected, Hyacca (literally "100 mosquitoes") has cornered the market. A bit like Midori in the chaotic indie jazz department, a bit like Toddle in the lo-fi indie rock department and a bit like, well, just about anything. Covering heavy rock, indie rock, punk, post everything and even a little new wave, the band seems happy to jump into any style, as long as it is raw and hard edged.

Their songs can shift from soft, tinkering jumbles to full-on distorted rock-outs to something in-between. Utilizing both male and female vocals as well as some totally spastic guitars, the band seems determined to do anything other than stand still. Even to vocals change up from simple singing to all out screaming. Many of the band's photos seem to focus on the large number of foot-pedals the guitar players use and the general chaos of the stage, another sign that the band likes to throw everything they have into their music, letting the pieces fall where they may.

Active since at least 2005, the band is something of an enigma, with little info available either on their site, their label's site or their MySapce page. With all the constant shifting, pushing themselves to the breaking point, it's a little tough to find anything to hold on to. That might be the band's weakness, a lack of any real definition. While a band like Hyacca would never (and should never) try and write a radio friendly pop hit, they could use more of something memorable to keep listeners coming back. They do achieve that from time to time, like on both "ライオット," (which sounds a little like Mass of the Fermenting Dregs,) and "スカイライン," (sounding like the aforementioned Toddle) but for the most part they do their best to push the audience away. Again, that's OK when that's likely to be exactly what their audience is looking for. We'll just have to see what Hyacca does next. It's been two or three years since their last (and first) full length release, a lifetime for a young band.

New Poll and Band Rankings

Just a quick note for those of you who are reading this through RSS and probably don't see the front page very often.

I've added a new poll to the right sidebar. I'd like to know what genre of music you'd like to see more of. Whatever it is you like most, or whatever it is you think is underrepresented on the blog. I obviously have my own favorite genres, but I'd also like to make sure to cover the stuff people want to see (of course.) So hop on over and vote. The poll will run until the end of the month when I'll add a new question. I hope to use that space to get a better feel for what all you wonderful constant readers are thinking.

The second new feature is the ranking system at the bottom of every entry. This will allow you to rank the band from 1 to 5, with 1 being "hate it!" and 5 being "love it!" This is an easy way to comment without actually commenting, simply letting everyone know what you think. Don't let the stop you from commenting as well, though! Feel free to plumb the depths of the blog and rate every band, if you'd like. These rankings appear regardless of whether or not the post is about a band, so just ignore all the non-band posts. There aren't many.

As always, thanks a lot for reading! The more feedback I get, the more I am inspired to write, so please make your voice heard in every way possible. I recently profiled my 250th band. There are many, many more to come, so I hope you stick around. Thanks!

Lillies and Remains

Once you know that "Lillies and Remains" is originally the title of a Bauhaus song, the pieces very quickly fall into place. Well that, and the fact the front-man Kent is the spitting aural image of Peter Murphy (at least in his lower/more monotone register) both come together to give you a pretty fair image of the band.

Having been formed in the middle of 2007, Lillies and Remains are still a bit of an unknown equation. They've released one one six track EP and a single video go along with it. Their sound, aside from he above influence, is almost bluesy at times, though the old-school goth vibe chases most of the blues away in favor of its much more stark gloom. Their use of guitars is similar to Bloc Party and other modern post-punk outfits, namely tight and quick. They are also generally bass and groove heavy, letting the lower end really drive both the rhythm and melody of the songs. Their cover of Love's "Alone Again Or" is typical goth tongue-in-cheek, transforming a rather vapid psychedelic soft rock hit from the 60's into an epic doom rock song that all the girls (and guys) in black-lipstick will all be dancing to at their own special proms for years to come.

Again, the band is still very young, so it will be interesting to see how they develop from here. They could easily fall into the usual trap of dropping the more interesting aspects (the darkness, the raw goth elements) in favor of reaching out to a broader audience with a lighter "bad-boy" image. Most notably, their live performances fall short of their namesake. They certainly aren't as theatrical, and Kent's voice doesn't seem up to the task of maintaining his lower recorded register in a live setting. Still, these are minor details that will hopefully be worked out as the band matures. Apparently they are already working on a new album, so we'll all just have to sit tight until it's released.

Best Japanese Albums of 2008 (Part 2)

Without a doubt, 2008 was nothing short of amazing when it came to new albums. Not only were there a lot of new faces releasing thrilling stuff, but there were also many old favorites that continued to churn out fantastic records.

I could tell around the middle of 2008 that there was going to be way too much ground to cover in terms of a "Best Of" year end collection, so I put together my first list of 30 albums back on July. You might want to give it a quick read to get yourself up to speed.

We've finally lurched into 2009, so naturally it's time to take one final look back at some of the Best Japanese Albums of 2008. What a list it is! I've spent an incredible amount of time pouring over the list, mostly getting lost in the staggering number of great videos I've mostly forgotten about. Really, I could probably just keep listing to the stuff from last year all through 2009 and still be happy.

So, get comfortable, grab a tasty beverage and join me after the jump for the Best Japanese Albums of 2008 (Part 2)!

First off, I'll start with my absolute favorites. Just about any of these albums could have made the top of the list, so everything is simply listed in alphabetical order.

54-71 - I'm Not Fine, Thank You. And You?

While these guys might not be the most creative sonically (every song sounds very much like every other song), they more than make up for it in sheer intensity. They are extremely sparse and focused, with performances that cut to the bone. Think Rage Against the Machine, only with even fewer frills. [BUY]

9mm Parabellum Bullet - Vampire

Another furiously performed album from possibly the biggest name in the new wave of indie rock. These guys have done nothing but great things right out of the gate, and Vampire is both their most mature and most exciting album so far. [BUY]

Avengers in Sci-Fi - Science Rock

Combining their super-tight post-punk playing with spaced-out electronics and production, Avengers in Sci-Fi creating something unique. Both rock and dance, energetic and calming, they manage to push the boundaries without creating too much chaos. [BUY]

De De Mouse - Sunset Girls

De De Mouse is a rare example of an artist who not only creates amazing music, but also creates entire worlds. His purely electronic style is also totally organic and absolutely original, full of fuzzy memories of childhood set in a Lisa Frank world. Absolutely wonderful stuff. [BUY]

Denki Groove - Yellow

Leave it to house/prog/trance masters Denki Groove to step away for a while, only to come back with two full length albums in one year! JPOP already made it onto the previous Best list, and they're back again with Yellow, their second release in 2008. It's actually a much more solid album, and totally infectious from beginning to end. [BUY]

Mo'some Tonebender - Sing!

Mo'some Tonebender have come such a long way over the years, but they've always churned out great sutff. Sing! sees them at their peak, with both great sounding songs and some really new direction. Very upbeat, yet still kicking all kinds of ass, as always. [BUY]

Mutyumu - Ilya

Combining operatic vocals, nu-metal guitars, rock piano and classical strings, it's safe to say the there isn't anyone quite like Mutyumu. Their second album pushed their sound even further, but in the death metal department as well as the profoundly moving softer, extended strong sections. A little something for every, just so long as you like things very very dark and brooding. [BUY]

sgt. - Stylus Fantasticus

Just one of many spectacular instruments band to release something great in 2008. Yet sgt. stands way above the crowd with their featured violin player and truly epic song structures. Like many other bands in this list, the mix a trancelike intensity with equally delicate details. While they've been together for a while, this is their first album. Let's hope for much more in the future! [BUY]

Versailles - Noble

Few bands rise to prominence as fast as Versailles. With their very first song released, "The Revenant Choir," they instantly shot to the very top of the vis-kei scene. This is no doubt due to the fact that they are amazing players, packing in nothing but quality in each of their epic symphonic metal songs. Oh, and I suppose some people might like the visual side to them as well. [BUY]

Vola & the Oriental Machine - Halan'na-ca Darkside

Vola changed things up a bit on this album (essentially an EP.) While it's still very much the same band, they went in a slightly more dance-oriented direction. It's still pretty intense and fun though. The use of short electro tracks in-between the songs proper really makes for a solid release. This is another band that's really become an icon in the scene, so it'll be very interesting to see what they do next. [BUY]

Those are the top 10! Oh, but there's still so much more. In fact I had to sift though close to 110 albums just to make this list of the second half of 2008! Naturally there's just too much to go into great depth with. If you want to learn more about each band, click their names and check out more info and videos. They're all superb!
